Intro: This article is about the landslide that happened in Washington on March 23.
Terms:
Mudslide – a mass of mud and other earthy material that is falling down a hillside or slope
Soil Saturation – excess amounts of water in soil, allowing for catastrophes such as mudslides to occur
Quicksand – loose, wet sand that yields easily to pressure and sucks in anything resting on or falling into it
Summary: This article discusses the mudslide that occurred in Washington on the 23rd. They think it occurred as a result of the excess rainwater that had come through the area. They think that the rainwater saturated the ground so much that it allowed for a slide to occur. Lots of damage occurred in the valley; 30 homes were destroyed and 18 people were missing. 8 Have been pronounced dead. Search and rescue teams are out to find the missing people.
Reaction: This mudslide may or may not have occurred without human activity. However, the micro shifts in climate may have contributed to it. With the melting glaciers as a result of global warming, the precipitation levels in certain areas may change. This could affect me by causing increasing amounts of floods in some areas and/or drought in others. This has the potential to alter the crop yields that we get and lead to famine in the extreme.
